Let’s Play DINGLES!

World renown pickleball pro Simone Jardim (se-MOAN-eh jhar-GEME) has introduced a new competitive drill that can be played as a game.

DINGLES focuses on cross-court dink consistency and transitioning into a full court point.

Watch Simone’s video from PrimeTime Pickleball:

Here are the basics for playing DINGLES:

Two points are available within each DINGLES play:

  • One point for the team that doesn’t make the first error.
  • One point for the team that doesn’t make the second error.

One team can score two points on each DINGLES play or points can be split between the two teams depending on who makes the errors.

START PLAY:

  • Play with four players.
  • Players begin at the kitchen.

FIRST POINT

  • At the start of each DINGLES play, two balls are used at the same time and you must dink the ball cross-court to your opponent.
  • The ball must stay in the kitchen, and you must hit the ball to your cross-court opponent’s half of the kitchen.
  • Continue cross-court dinking to your opponent until one of the four players makes an error and their ball is no longer in play. (Example:  hit wide, too long, or into the net.)
  • If you are the player who makes the error, you shout “DINGLES” and all four players now play with the remaining live ball.
  • If your team committed the error, your opponents score one point.

SECOND POINT

  • All four players now continue playing with the remaining live ball.
  • Players can hit anywhere on the court and to either opponent. Dinks, drives, lobs, and smashes are all allowed.
  • Play continues until  one of the four players makes an error and the ball is no longer in play.
  • If your team committed the error, your opponents score one point.

NOTES

  • Be sure to rotate with your partner so that you practice both forehand and backhand cross-court dinking.
  • Be prepared to try DINGLES a few times to get the hang of it.
  • You will find that it improves your cross-court dinking, your transition from dinking to whole court play, and your patience.
  • ENJOY!
